LONDON: The British police, investigating the murder of Dr Imran Farooq, said yesterday they had recovered a knife and a brick used in the attack from the site where the Muttahida Qaumi Movementís leader was found murdered.

Dr Imran, 50, died of stab wounds on his neck and head injuries, including the wounds caused to his head by the blunt trauma, after he was attacked on his street, the Green Lane, in north London, Edgware.

Various news reports had recently suggested that Dr Imran Farooq, who according to the MQM was on vacation from active politics but remained one of the key officials, may have been about to join ranks with former president Pervez Musharraf at the launch of his party yesterday.

At the press conference to launch his All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), The News asked Musharraf if there was any credibility in the reports that Dr Imran was considering to join his party or whether they were close to each other. Muhsarraf replied bluntly: ìI have never met Dr Imran Farooq and never knew him.î

The former president also said he didnít know how had the papers reached to this conclusion. At an informal event after the launch, he was again asked by a guest over tea about Dr Imran Farooq. Musharraf again insisted that the news of the murdered politician was like a revelation to him and was completely baseless.

In the latest statement related to Dr Imranís murder investigation, the Scotland Yard said the kitchen knife, with a 14cm (5žin) blade, and the house brick were found in the Green Lane, where the attack took place shortly before 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 16, after the MQM politician was returning to his family after finishing work at a nearby pharmacy.

The police confirmed that detectives from the Counter Terrorism Specialist Operations Command were now looking for two Asian men in connection with the killing of Dr Imran Farooq, who had been living in the UK for 11 years. Previously, the police were only looking for one man but the discovery of the tools used in the attack means the police have made some progress.

Despite the involvement of the police unit which specialises in investigating the killings of political nature, the Scotland Yard again maintained that it was going ahead with the investigation with an open mind.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “A number of witnesses have already contacted police, but officers believe there are other people who may hold vital information about the incident and they continue to urge them to come forward.” Also yesterday, the police issued a dedicated email address for the general public to contact the police with any relevant information related to Dr Imran Farooq.
