LONDON: The Karachi land mafia is behind the new wave of killings in the city, Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq has claimed.
‘The mafia is playing the three coalition partners, the PPP, the MQM and the ANP against each other with these blind, but broad daylight murders,’ he said while talking to Dawn.
The minister who was on his way to Germany via London to attend an education conference also claimed that the purpose of the land mafia was to keep the coalition government unsettled enough to be able to carry on its nefarious activities without let or hindrance.
‘They have the money and the fire power and Karachi’s land is gold mine. They buy people and those not on sale they terrorise and those who refuse to be terrorised they kill,’ he said.
But where is the government? He was asked. ‘We are doing our best. We have formed committees, there is a core provincial committee comprising five MPS each from PPP and MQM, and there is also one federal core committee comprising two MNAs each from PPP and MQM. We meet regularly and try to put out bilateral fires. We need to have similar arrangements with the ANP as well,’ he added.
He said every time Asfandyar Wali Khan and Altaf Hussain talked to each other on telephone it would be followed by a new wave of killings which he said indicated that there was a hidden hand which did not want the MQM and the ANP to reach an understanding.
He was not sure how the May 12 strike call given by the ANP and opposed by the MQM would play out and said he was keeping his fingers crossed, ‘I am sure the president would intervene and mediate between the MQM and the ANP’.
When his attention was drawn to the miserable plight of the education sector in the rural Sindh, he said he was aware of it and was trying to bridge at least the gap that has emerged in recent years between the rural and urban Sindh on the education front.
‘Recently I revived a multi-million-dollar World Bank programme which was discontinued in 2007 for recruiting teachers with the right qualifications,’ he added.
He also agreed with this correspondent that the physical infrastructure in the rural Sindh was in pathetic condition with even cities like Sukkur, Larkana having no suitable roads and there being no properly motorable link roads within the rural part of the province.
‘That is why many of our voters have started demanding that we hand over the rural Sindh towns as well to Mustafa Kamal,’ he said light heartedly.
He admitted that Mr Niamatullah Khan, the former Jamaat-i-Islami Nazim of Karachi, and the current one had done wonders with the city ‘and we hope those responsible for rural Sindh infrastructure would also do the same’.
‘You see most of the elected local councillors are not even matriculates and many are too unforgiving to govern even handedly. Some are said to have refused to issue death certificates to those whose family members did not vote for them. We cannot do much about them. They are protected under the sixth schedule which expires in August this year,’ he added.
He said the PPP was all for the revival of the deputy commissioner’s institution, ‘but the MQM says its does not want its extension to Karachi and Hyderabad. We are trying to get them on board’.
When asked why even meritorious students from the rural Sindh were not allowed admission in the prestigious institutions of Karachi like the Dow University of Health Sciences and the NED University, he said the provincial core group had taken up the matter with the governor.
‘We have proposed that a quota should be reserved in both the rural and urban institutions for students of the two parts of the province.
There is a rural quota in the Karachi institutions but it is reserved only for the city’s suburbs like Gadap,’ he added.

ISLAMABAD: In an unprecedented move, top leaders of the Tableeghi Jamaat have denounced enforcement of Sharia at gunpoint, religious extremism, militancy and terrorism. Leaders of the Jamaat, who scrupulously avoid speaking on controversial issues, also called for promoting inter-faith harmony, tolerance, human rights, social justice and peace.
They were speaking at the conclusion of a three-day congregation near here on Monday. ‘Shariah cannot be enforced at gunpoint,’ declared Haji Abdul Wahab, Amir of the Tableeghi Jamaat, Pakistan.
Had that been the case, Allah Almighty would have sent fierce angels to protect prophets and enforce their faiths, he said.
The 90-year-old scholar, who left his job as sessions judge in pre-partition India and joined the Jamaat, cited the example of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), said the Holy Prophet never used force. Instead he spread the word of God only by peaceful means.
Haji Abdul Wahab also condemned extremism and militancy in the name of Islam, apparently a reference to the growing trend of Talibanisation and enforcement of Shria in Swat and other areas in the NWFP.
The congregation of tens of thousands of people was also addressed by Maulana Jamshaid, Maulana Mohammad Ahmed and Mualana Fahim.
‘Muslims should preach peace, brotherhood and tolerance across the world, including Israel. They must avoid imposing their creed or faith by force because Islam is a religion of peace and promotes tranquillity,’ another scholar told the mammoth gathering.
Maulana Mohammad Ahmed, a former educationist, said that Muslims should inspire adherents of other religions by their good moral and social behaviour. People who thought that Shariah could be imposed by force were simpletons, he said.
‘We should reach out to all human beings and guide them out of darkness. Before the advent of Islam, people were so inflexible that they used to bury their daughters without remorse. (But they changed.) Remember …human beings are above other creations of God,’ said Maulana Ahmed, the custodian of the largest seminary of the Tableeghi school of thought in Raiwind near Lahore.
The main message of the gathering was that Islam could not be confined to Pakistan or any other geographical area and there was a need to spread the religion of peace in every corner of the world.
People from across the country who had converged there pledged that they would continue the mission of spreading Islam across the world.

I've been saying for years that the two pieces on the game board that matter to those who want a Caliphate are Pakistan, because of its nukes, and Saudi Arabia because of its oil. The realpolitik problem with the Afghani war is that it's destabilizing Pakistan so much -- Afghanistan falling to fundamentalists really doesn't matter that much, Pakistan doing so changes world geopolitics significantly.
Isn't that... interesting. And while the accounts of the fight are somewhat ambiguous, it doesn't sound to me like the Taliban were forced to leave. Is the military deliberately deciding to let the Taliban continue to put pressure on the civilian government? One does wonder, doesn't one? Or is morale too uncertain to risk against the Taliban? Or are they so overstretched they can't get a company 60 miles from the capital? Or does the "truce" mean that they've decided to completely write off the entire north and let the Taliban take it over unopposed, even when the citizens don't want it? Whichever it is, it isn't good.

I don't know if that's true, but I suspect that as long as attacks on the Taliban are seen as doing America's work against their own countrymen, that the military is going to be both reluctant and somewhat crippled in doing so. It is able to solve long standing problems Islamabad could not.

In the Video a Girl (Chand Bibi) was lying face down on the ground and 2 people holding her both legs and hands, the third Talib is flogging her, The Girl is crying and asking for mercy in Pushto, in the back ground lots of people can be seen standing and a Talib holding AK 47 assault rifle can also be seen. After the flogging the girl got up and escort in a mud house by Talibans.
MQM is heavily criticized by Right wing parties of Pakistan especially Jamat e Islami who actually started a slander campaign against MQM on SMS and on internet, The Jamat who is now led by Munawwar Hassan openly sides with Talibans, (Who are killings innocent Men Women and Children in Mosques, Imam Bargahs in suicide attacks and beheading Pakistani Soldiers) called MQM criticism against flogging as Un Islamic and try to relate the incident with Hudood Laws of Quran.

(3) And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers –
Now if we compare Swat incident it is actually against what has been ordered in Quran.

Secondly in Islamic law a Na Mahram can not touch a Muslim Woman, But Talibans clearly violates the Islamic Shariah and male Taliban Members were seen holding the woman.
Thirdly Quran and Islam made a system of justice, The question is whether these Talibans had 4 Witnesses against that Girl and the Boy they accused of Adultery?
Did Allah give right to implement those Islamic Laws and Punishments to a Muslim State where a Judge after listening the case and witnesses can order punishment OR some people with out the knowledge of Islam with out having any religious Degree can do that?

Everyone including Talibans and NWFP government accepts that incident was occurred.
The NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar also accepts that this incident occurred in Swat but said it was happened in January 2009 and the purpose of this video is to sabotage the on going Peace Accord Between Talibans and NWFP Government.
Now the Question is when every concern authority was accepting that the incident occurred what happened over night that all the concern people backed off from their statements and start calling the video as Fake?
The CJP of Pakistan took Sue Moto action in this regard and asked the Chief Secretary NWFP and Commissioner Swat to Present the Girl in Supreme Court but they failed to do so by making stupid excuses.
